Tirupati Balaji Darshan Guide: TTD Booking, Dress Code and Visiting Tips

By Dharma Jyothi Vedika Editorial Board •

Quick facts: Planning your Tirumala visit

Best darshan option: Book the ₹300 Special Entry Darshan (SED) online 2 to 3 months in advance via the official Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) portal. Average queue waiting time is 2 to 4 hours with SED, compared to 8 to 20 hours for free Sarva Darshan (SSD).

Strict requirements: Men must wear a plain dhoti or white kurta-pyjama. Women must wear a saree, half-saree, or chudidar with dupatta pinned across both shoulders. Mobile phones and digital watches are strictly barred beyond the Vaikuntam queue complex.

The Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple atop the Seven Hills of Tirumala is among the most visited pilgrimage centers globally. Because daily footfall frequently exceeds 60,000 pilgrims, visiting without understanding TTD ticketing protocols, dress codes, and baggage screening creates avoidable delays.

Darshan categories and booking procedures

TTD operates multiple entry tiers depending on availability and reservation windows:

  • Special Entry Darshan (₹300): Quotas open around the 20th to 24th of each month for the subsequent month on the official website (ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in). Each ticket provides entry during a designated one-hour slot along with one complimentary laddu prasadam.
  • Sarva Darshan (SSD Tokens): Free general entry. Offline time-slot tokens (SSD) are issued at Tirupati railway station and Srinivasam Complex on a first-come, first-served basis. If tokens run out, pilgrims join the unreserved queue.
  • Divya Darshan (Pedestrian Pilgrims): For pilgrims ascending on foot via the Alipiri Mettu (3,550 steps) or Srivari Mettu (2,388 steps) footpath paths. Tokens are verified at intermediate checkpoints and linked to the pilgrim’s Aadhaar card.
  • Senior citizens and infants: Special entry is provided for pilgrims aged 65 and above, as well as parents carrying infants under one year, through the Supadham entrance at scheduled times daily.

Strict dress code regulations

TTD strictly enforces traditional Indian clothing rules at all entrance points:

  • Men: White dhoti (panche) with an upper cloth (angavastram), or a traditional kurta and pyjama. Western wear such as jeans, t-shirts, track pants, shorts, and caps are forbidden.
  • Women: Traditional saree, half-saree, or chudidar/salwar with dupatta properly draped. Leggings without a long kameez, western gowns, jeans, and sleeveless tops are not permitted.
  • Children: Young girls are encouraged to wear traditional pavada sattai or frock. Boys should wear dhoti or kurta.

Step-by-step pilgrim workflow in Tirumala

  1. Head tonsure (Kalyanakatta): If offering hair, visit the Central Kalyanakatta near the main temple. Hair tonsuring is free, and sanitized blades are provided by TTD staff.
  2. Holy bath (Pushkarini): Pilgrims sprinkle holy water from Swami Pushkarini lake on their head before proceeding to darshan.
  3. Electronic luggage deposit: Deposit mobile phones, cameras, leather belts, and smart watches at the designated TTD baggage counters near the Vaikuntam Queue Complex. Keep your physical ticket printout and original photo ID in your hand.
  4. Vaikuntam queue entry: Report to the entry gate matching your slot time. Inside the queue compartments, TTD provides free drinking water, hot milk for infants, and light meals.
  5. Sanctum darshan: Move through the Jaya-Vijaya dwara, Bangaru Vakili (golden entrance), and view the Moolavirat of Lord Venkateswara from the Kulasekhara Padi.
  6. Laddu collection: After completing the circumambulation (pradakshina), collect your prasadam at the laddu counters outside the temple using the barcode on your original ticket.
