Understanding Choghadiya Timings: How to Use Shubh, Labh, Amrit and Avoid Rog, Kaal

By Dharma Jyothi Vedika Editorial Board •

Quick guide: Reading today’s Choghadiya

Choghadiya divides daytime (sunrise to sunset) and nighttime (sunset to next sunrise) into 8 equal parts of approximately 90 minutes each.

Best periods: Amrit (nectar, universally auspicious), Shubh (good, ideal for religious and educational ceremonies), and Labh (gain, best for business transactions and financial contracts). Char (movable) is good for journeys and transport.
Inauspicious periods: Rog (illness), Kaal (loss/quarrel), and Udveg (anxiety). Avoid new beginnings during these windows.

When urgent decisions require immediate action and a full Vedic astrological consultation is impractical, Choghadiya provides a quick time-selection framework. Widely relied upon across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and North India, it enables individuals to identify constructive hourly intervals on any day of the week.

How Choghadiya is calculated

The word Choghadiya derives from Sanskrit Chatur-Ghatika, meaning four Ghatis. In ancient Indian timekeeping, one day consists of 60 Ghatis, and one Ghati equals 24 minutes. Therefore, four Ghatis equal exactly 96 minutes under equal day-night conditions.

In practice, local daytime (from actual sunrise to sunset) is divided into 8 equal segments. Because sunrise and sunset times shift throughout the seasons, daytime segments can vary from 80 minutes in winter to over 100 minutes in peak summer. The same division applies to the night period from sunset to the following sunrise.

The seven Choghadiya types and their rulers

Each Choghadiya is ruled by a celestial body, determining its nature:

Choghadiya Nature Ruling planet Recommended activities
Amrit (अमृत) Best / Auspicious Moon (Chandra) All spiritual, medical, commercial, and domestic work
Shubh (शुभ) Good / Auspicious Jupiter (Brihaspati) Religious ceremonies, education, marriage discussions, pujas
Labh (लाभ) Gainful / Auspicious Mercury (Budha) Commercial ventures, signing contracts, buying assets
Char (चर) Neutral / Movable Venus (Shukra) Journeys, vehicle operation, departures, physical relocations
Rog (रोग) Inauspicious Mars (Mangala) Avoid medical operations or starting projects; suits competitive defeat
Kaal (काल) Inauspicious Saturn (Shani) Avoid wealth accumulation or starting journeys; causes obstacles
Udveg (उद्वेग) Inauspicious Sun (Surya) Creates worry and mental distress; avoid negotiations and property deals

Practical tips for daily application

  1. First period of the day: The first daytime Choghadiya is always ruled by the planet of that weekday. On Sunday it starts with Udveg (Sun), on Monday with Amrit (Moon), on Tuesday with Rog (Mars), on Wednesday with Labh (Mercury), on Thursday with Shubh (Jupiter), on Friday with Char (Venus), and on Saturday with Kaal (Saturn).
  2. Rahu Kalam precedence: Even if a Choghadiya indicates Shubh or Labh, classical Muhurtha Shastra holds that local Rahu Kalam overrides positive Choghadiyas for new journeys and major investments. Check both indicators together.
  3. Night activities: For overnight travel, late-night financial settlements, or vigil rituals, refer to the Night Choghadiya cycle, which starts from local sunset.
