Core directional guidelines for residential spaces
Northeast (Ishanya): Ruled by water and Jupiter. Keep light, open, and clean. Best suited for the puja room or living area. Never construct toilets or staircases here.
Southeast (Agneya): Ruled by fire and Venus. Ideal location for the kitchen cooktop and electrical panels.
Southwest (Nairutya): Ruled by earth and Rahu. Heaviest zone; best suited for the master bedroom and financial storage.
Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian architectural system codified in texts such as the Brihat Samhita and Manasara. Rather than relying on rigid superstition, classical Vastu aligns building geometry with sunlight, prevailing wind currents, and the earth’s geomagnetic axis to foster natural ventilation, thermal comfort, and psychological well-being.
The four directional corners (Vastu Purusha Mandala)
A balanced plot or apartment layout distributes residential functions across directional energy zones:
- Northeast (Ishanya): The head of the Vastu Purusha. Because solar ultraviolet rays enter from the northeast during early morning, this corner should have ample windows, water features, or a prayer sanctuary. Avoid heavy storage here.
- Southeast (Agneya): The culinary fire zone. Locating the kitchen stove in the southeast allows morning and midday ventilation while preventing cooking fumes from circulating back through living bedrooms.
- Southwest (Nairutya): The anchoring corner. Because infrared radiation peaks from the southwest during late afternoons, this quadrant should feature thicker walls, elevated ground, and minimal exterior openings. It is best reserved for the master bedroom.
- Northwest (Vayavya): The air zone. Governed by wind and the Moon, this corner suits guest bedrooms, children’s study zones, and garage parking.

Main door placement and threshold rules
The main door (Simha Dwara) functions as the principal energy portal for the residence:
- Favorable entrance Padas: On the North wall, padas 3, 4, and 5 (Mukhya, Bhallata, Soma) are auspicious. On the East wall, padas 3 and 4 (Jayanta, Indra) are recommended. On the South wall, pada 4 (Grihakshata) is acceptable.
- Raised threshold (Dehli): Classical homes incorporate a solid wooden threshold. It acts as an environmental barrier against outdoor dust and insect ingress while symbolically delineating external public space from private sanctuary.
- Door swing: The entrance door should open inward in a clockwise direction without squeaking or rubbing against floor tiles.
- Obstructions to avoid: Avoid positioning the entrance directly facing a dead-end street (Veedhi Shoola), a high lamp post, or a large electrical transformer.
Kitchen and water drainage rules
The kitchen represents metabolic vitality and physical nourishment:
- Cooking orientation: Position the cooktop so that the cook faces East while preparing food. Eastward morning sunlight aids hygiene and visual clarity.
- Separation of fire and water: Do not place the kitchen sink and water filter immediately adjacent to the gas burner or induction stove. Maintain at least two feet of separation between fire and water appliances.
- Water drainage: Waste water outlets and rainwater downspouts should drain toward the North or East quadrant of the property.
