Mondays during Karthika Masam hold particular significance for Shiva worship. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and regions observing the Telugu Amanta calendar, Karthika Masam 2026 features exactly four Somavaramalu. Devotees observe day-long fasting, visit Shiva temples for Rudrabhishekam, and break their fast only after sighting the evening stars.
1st Somavaram: Monday, November 16, 2026 (Shukla Saptami).
2nd Somavaram: Monday, November 23, 2026 (Shukla Chaturdashi, Eve of Pournami).
3rd Somavaram: Monday, November 30, 2026 (Krishna Saptami).
4th Somavaram: Monday, December 7, 2026 (Krishna Chaturdashi, Eve of Amavasya).
Fasting Rules & Traditions: How to Observe the Vratam
The scriptures describe multiple levels of observance for Somavara Vratam. Choose the one that suits your physical capacity and daily responsibilities:
1. Eka Bhuktam (Single Satvik Meal after Star Sighting)
This is the standard, most practical practice for households. The devotee takes an early morning bath, performs Shiva puja, and abstains from regular meals during daylight hours. Drinking water, buttermilk, or tender coconut water is permitted. In the evening, after sunset and Pradosha puja, the devotee looks at the sky to locate the first visible star (Nakshatra Darshanam) or the moon, offers a prayer, and consumes a single satvik meal without onions or garlic.
2. Nirahara Vratam (Waterless / Strict Fast)
Observed primarily by seasoned practitioners or sadhakas, this involves taking no food or water from sunrise to evening puja. It should only be attempted by individuals in robust physical health without chronic medical conditions.
3. Phalahara Vratam (Fruit & Milk Diet)
Ideal for working professionals, pregnant or nursing women, elders, and students. The devotee avoids cooked grains (rice, wheat) and takes seasonal fruits, milk, nuts, and boiled tubers during the day, maintaining prayerful awareness.
Morning Shiva Abhishekam Procedure at Home
You can perform a reverent, complete abhishekam at home using simple utensils:
- Purification: Take a bath at dawn, wear clean traditional clothing, sit facing East or North on a wooden plank or mat.
- Achamana & Sankalpa: Sip water thrice from the uddharini reciting Om Keshavaya Swaha, Om Narayanaya Swaha, Om Madhavaya Swaha. Mentally declare your intention to perform Karthika Somavara Shiva aradhana for family peace and health.
- Jala Abhishekam: Pour clean water over the Shiva Lingam slowly while chanting the Shiva Panchakshari: Om Namah Shivaya 11, 21, or 108 times.
- Panchamrita Snanam: Offer milk, curd, honey, and ghee sequentially, followed by a final rinse with pure water.
- Alankara: Pat the Lingam dry with a clean cloth. Apply three horizontal stripes of Vibhuti (Tripundra) and a dot of Chandan. Place unbroken Bilva leaves on top.
- Dhoopa & Deepa: Offer incense and light a pure cow ghee lamp.
- Naivedyam: Offer fresh fruits, soaked moong dal with jaggery, or coconut.
- Harati: Wave camphor before the deity while reciting the Shiva Karpura Gauram prayer.
Evening Rituals: Pradosham & Nakshatra Darshanam
Between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM (Pradosha Kalam), clean the altar area and light fresh lamps with sesame oil or cow ghee. Recite the Lingashtakam or Shiva Sahasranama. Once dusk falls completely, step outdoors or to a balcony to view the first evening star or the crescent moon. Offer anjali mudra (folded hands), thank the Lord for granting the discipline to fast, and take the prasadam.
What If You Miss a Monday Due to Unavoidable Circumstances?
If illness, travel, or family rituals prevent fasting on one of the four Mondays, tradition permits observing an alternate fast on the following Monday or on Karthika Pournami. Never feel guilt over genuine physical limitations; sincere mental remembrance (Smaranam) carries equal sanctity.
